Bokšto Skveras

Civic Trust Awards Citation

Bokšto Skveras breathes new life into a disused 15th/16th Century UNESCO world heritage site in Vilnius. This transformative project exemplifies a creative and meticulous approach to heritage restoration, celebrating the deep history of the buildings while introducing contemporary architectural ideas that resonate with the present.

The commitment to sustainability is woven into the fabric of Bokšto Skveras, showcasing a holistic approach to environmental responsibility and aligns seamlessly with the broader goal of contextualising the restoration within the fabric of the city. Accessibility has been consideration within the restoration process with by the inclusion of a new lift core. The internal spaces underwent a rationalisation process, ensuring consistency of heights and incorporating subtle ramping where appropriate. The project also provides public access to the gardens, fostering a sense of community engagement and shared public realm. In addition to its architectural achievements, the scheme demonstrates a respect for natural heritage with the preservation of a centuries-old linden tree at the heart of the complex.

Special attention was paid to the tree’s underground roots during the reconstruction, and innovative solutions were employed, such as covering the tree with water-permeable material to ensure its continued growth. The project’s multifunctional nature adds depth to its impact, housing a diverse range of private and public functions.

Public access to the gardens is encouraged, contributing to the creation of a vibrant and inclusive community space. Educational initiatives, including structured visits and participation in the Open House Vilnius 2022 festival, further emphasise the project’s commitment to engaging with the broader public and fostering a deeper understanding of Lithuanian history and architecture. Bokšto Skveras emerges as a compelling blend of historic preservation and contemporary ingenuity.

The restoration of the existing structures within the UNESCO Heritage site reflects a deep respect for heritage, while modern interventions breathe vitality into the complex. The play of light through cleverly covered modern roof windows adds a layer of intrigue to the interior spaces, exemplifying the project’s nuanced approach to blending the old with the new.
