LSBU Hub
Southwark, Greater London
Civic Trust Awards Citation
The ambitious retrofit of the London South Bank University 1970s London Road Building not only reimagines the university’s physical space but also redefines its role as a vibrant and accessible hub for both students and the local community.
A standout feature of LSBU Hub is its striking façade design, characterised by a distinctive glass and steel structure that replaces the former forbidding brick façades. This transformation not only enhances the building’s aesthetic appeal but also fosters a seamless integration between internal and external spaces. The strategic relocation of the main entrance to the south-east creates a new civic front door, complete with pedestrian-friendly pathways, landscaped gardens, and cycle storage, emphasising the university’s commitment to community engagement.
The LSBU Hub’s interior spaces showcase a blend of contemporary and sustainable design elements. The exposed coffered concrete slabs, painted white for improved aesthetics, contribute to a brighter and more streamlined internal environment. LED lighting fixtures, intelligent climate control systems, and the use of sustainable materials underline the university’s dedication to environmental responsibility. Accessibility features are well thought out with intuitive wayfinding, signage and co-locating lifts with stairs ensuring all individuals can access different levels of the building with ease.
A highlight of the building is its central library, a double-height space with sculptural black stairs and acoustic slatted plywood soffits that create an environment conducive to study and exploration. The library not only offers a wealth of academic resources but also serves as a community focal point. The integration of a gym facility in the lower ground further promotes well-being and inclusivity, providing individuals with spaces to prioritise both their academic and physical health. The LSBU Hub’s commitment to sustainability extends to green roofs, rainwater harvesting systems, and communal areas that encourage collaboration and idea exchange.
By opening its doors to the wider community, the Hub has become a catalyst for outreach, fostering a sense of belonging and personal growth.
Judges’ Comments: “The reinvention of LSBU Hub has not only transformed a once tired facility into a dynamic student environment but serves as a model for reusing existing structures and leveraging educational institutions to stimulate urban revitalisation, making it well deserving of recognition.”
