The Hyde Park Picture House
Leeds, Yorkshire & Humberside
Civic Trust Highly Commended
The restoration and extension of the Grade II listed Hyde Park Picture House is an example of how thoughtful architecture can balance historic preservation with modern functionality, accessibility, and sustainability. This project not only safeguards the beloved cinema's legacy but also ensures it remains a vibrant community asset for generations to come. The conservation of the original building fabric has been executed with care, employing traditional techniques to restore its iconic features. From the faience replacement by Darwen Terracotta to the intricate plaster repairs and the sensitive refurbishment of the gas lighting, there is an attention to detail. The restored cast iron streetlamp and terrazzo flooring celebrate the building’s heritage, while the contemporary additions respect its historical significance. The new brickwork of the extension, with its playful 35mm film reel motif, cleverly nods to the cinema’s origins and Leeds’ role as the birthplace of motion picture film. The three-story extension provides much-needed functionality, with its design, a blend of steel, smoked glass, and partial red brick, complementing the original structure while introducing a modern aesthetic. The extension houses vital amenities, including a ground-floor café, a flexible community space, and a basement screening room. These spaces not only enhance user experience but also generate essential secondary income, supporting the cinema's financial sustainability. The retention and reuse of original materials, combined with efficient design solutions, reduce environmental impact while preserving the building’s character. Excavating the basement for a second screen and using acoustic insulation demonstrate ingenuity in maximizing the building's potential within its constrained urban site. Accessibility and inclusion are at the heart of this project. A landscaped ramp, an internal platform lift, and accessible WCs ensure the building is welcoming to all. Both screening rooms include wheelchair-accessible seating, with features like removeable seats offering flexibility. The thoughtful addition of handrails in key locations and the acoustically insulated second screen underscore the commitment to a universally inclusive environment. The cinema’s programming further emphasises inclusion, catering to diverse user groups through initiatives like dementia- and autism-friendly screenings, baby-friendly showings, and a pay-what-you-can scheme.
