Union Terrace Gardens

Aberdeen City, Scotland

The redevelopment of Union Terrace Gardens (UTG) is a masterful achievement. Transforming a historically challenging site with a complex topography and listed elements, this project demonstrates a thoughtful approach to urban regeneration, ensuring that its outcome is a source of pride for Aberdeen. The design pays homage to Aberdeen's tram heritage with the three buildings, each crafted with exceptional attention to detail. The perforated cladding panels, internal timber finishes, and carefully designed balustrades exhibit a commitment to quality. Internally, the use of high-end materials elevates the buildings above typical base-level finishes, attracting prestigious tenants and creating inviting spaces. The integration of the performance area's suspended lighting feature and thoughtfully arranged landscaping further enriches the aesthetic and functional appeal of the site. Sustainability underpins the project’s vision. Biodiversity has been enhanced with the planting of mature, disease-resistant trees, replacing older vegetation, while the landscaping reduces maintenance needs and supports year-round greenery. Accessibility and longevity were prioritised through durable, weather-resistant materials and the inclusion of interior lifts to mitigate vandalism and downtime. The environmentally conscious design aligns with broader city objectives to create a greener, more sustainable urban centre. The site now offers street-level access, ramps, and lifts, ensuring all areas are navigable for people of varying abilities. The decision to position lifts inside the buildings reflects a thoughtful response to challenges faced by external lifts in public spaces. Community consultation played a vital role in shaping inclusive amenities such as public toilets, a children’s play area, and spaces for cafés and events, ensuring the gardens are welcoming for all demographics. The UTG regeneration has fundamentally revitalised Aberdeen’s city centre, creating a green sanctuary that serves as a cultural, social, and recreational hub. Public engagement throughout the planning stages ensured that the project resonated with the community’s needs, leading to spaces that encourage safety, interaction, and year-round use. Events such as Scotland’s Festival of Light and informal gatherings highlight its versatility. Importantly, the gardens foster a renewed sense of civic pride and optimism, signalling a brighter future for Aberdeen.
